2019:  150th Anniversary of Death: Hector Berlioz († 08.03.1869 in Paris)

Guided by a powerful imagination and inspired by some of history’s greatest storytellers, Hector Berlioz created bold, inventive music that was seething with drama. 150 years after the French composer’s death we are celebrating his life and his works at the SCL Festival.
Hector Berlioz lived from 1803 to 1869, embracing the new Romantic movement. His ground-breaking works showed early evidence of his originality. Berlioz combined his love of the classics and their musical clarity with nineteenth-century Romanticism, pioneering the latter’s revolutionary sound palette.
Nobody can deny his incredible mastery of the orchestra, using previously unheard-of instrumental combinations to create entirely new tonal colours. Additionally he devised new musical forms to suit his unique vision.
He knew a wide variety of great and influential artists including Balakirev, Balzac, Chopin, Delacroix, Dumas, Glinka, Hugo, Ingres, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Paganini, Rimsky-Korsakov, George Sand and Wagner. Berlioz’ life is essential to the cultural history of the 19th century.
