Piu Kiu College Orchestra

 

Pui Kiu College Orchestra, established in 2010, has grown into a fully equipped ensemble. The orchestra currently consists of approximately 60 members. In the past, we have participated in various Hong Kong and international competitions, including the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government Youth Music Festival, Joint School Music Competition, and Hong Kong International Music Festival, achieving excellent results. The orchestra has also performed in Singapore, Suzhou, Shenzhen, and Macau. This will be our first participation in the Vienna Music Festival, and we hope it will further enhance the students' level.

Dr. William So received Master degree of Music in composition and trumpet performance in 2005 and Doctor of Musical Arts in 2008 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. As a composer, his works have been performed throughout United States, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, South Korea and Scandinavian. His repertory includes works written for various solo, small ensemble, large ensemble, and orchestral performing forces. He is presently a member of the ASCAP (American Society of Composer, Arranger and Publisher), and has also been the recipient of various scholarships, awards, and commissions, such as Carolyn Lott Scholarship for his contribution to compositions on church instrumental music, ASCAPPLUS award from 2005-2009, Honorable Mention at Vanguard Premieres International Composition Competition 2004 etc.. His work O bone Jesu was released in the CD of “Vangurad Premiers Volume 1: 2003 – 2005” on March 2006 with well received. As a teacher, Dr. So served as adjunct professor in music theory, composition and music technology at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and University of Macau. Currently, he is serving as part time lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary and Hong Kong Music International Institue of Music. Orchestra conductor at Pui Kiu College (Primary and Secondary sessions), International Christian Quality Music Secondary and Primary School and PLK Laws Foundation College etc..

King Fung (violin/viola) is a dedicated music educator, conductor, chamber musician and orchestral musician. As a music educator, FUNG serves as the Music Panel Head of Pui Kiu College, conductor and founder of Pui Kiu College Orchestra (Secondary and Primary) and instructor and founder of Pui Kiu College Chinese Orchestra (Secondary and Primary). FUNG's orchestral engagements include the Macao Orchestra, Claflin Hill Symphony, Melrose Symphony Orchestra, and pop concerts including celebrities including Joey Yung cho-yee. As a chamber musician, FUNG has attended Meadowmount School of Music with scholarship playing and performing chamber music with musicians including Jiafeng Chen (violin) and Han Soo Kim (violin). FUNG received Post-graduate Performance Diploma and Bachelor of Music (Cum Laude), major in viola performance, at the Boston Conservatory with scholarship. He studied viola with Patricia McCarty and Rictor Noren, and chamber music with Max Levinson, Irina Muresanu, Roger Tapping, and Eli Esptein. He has also participated in various solo and chamber masterclasses, including those conducted by Roger Tapping, Roger Benedict, Cathy Basrak, Alan de Veritch, Samuel Rhodes, Sidney Curtiss, Philip Ying, Cynthia Phleps, Nardo Poy, Dov Schindlein, Marcus Thompson, Helen McCallus, Carol Rodland, Mela Tenenbaum and Lydian string quartet.
