De la Salle Santiago Zobel Strings

 

The De La Salle Zobel Strings is a group of the Music Unit composed of advanced strings students from Grade School and High School Level. It further aims to provide students with various musical skills through the discovery of musical concepts and applying them to string performances, thus further deepening one’s sensitivity to and appreciation of music as an art. The group has been performing in different concerts and events locally and abroad. In August 2022, the group bagged numerous awards in the Singapore Raffles International Music Festival 2023, Singapore (Online Strings Competition). They won the Gold Award with the Highest Honor Chamber Ensemble Category, Gold Award for String Quintet Category, Gold Award for String Quartet Category, Silver Award for Chamber Music under 12 years old, Excellent Performance Award and Elite Award for solo performance. String players who joined the DLSZ Orchestra in April 2019 took home the Gold Award from the Chicago International Music Festival in the United States, and in June 2019 the ensemble took home the Gold and Outstanding Performance Awards. Under the mentorship and guidance of Mr. Leopoldo F. Sumera Jr., GS/HS Strings Teacher, the DLSZ Strings, with the support of the school, will continue its tradition of inspiring others through music for the love of God from whom all musical gifts flow, for the community, and for the country.

Mr. Leopoldo F. Sumera Jr. is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music with the degree of Bachelor of Music in Music Education major in Violin. He started his violin lessons in St. Scholastica’s College Manila, Music Department. His desire and passion for music continued when he entered the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music in 1997 until 2001 under the tutelage of Proceso Yusi. He has joined many performing groups starting with the UST Symphony Orchestra, the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra among the rest and has been performing not only in the Philippines but as well as other asian countries like Singapore, Hongkong and Indonesia in Andrea Bocelli’s asian tour concert with the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra. He joined the faculty of DLSZ in 2005 as Strings teacher for Grade School and High School students and assigned as conductor of the DLSZ Symphony Orchestra. Aside from performing and teaching, he is also one of the authors of Music Art and Physical Education & Health (MAPEH) Book for Grade 1, 2, and 9 under FNB Educational, Inc. On April 3, 2019, he led and conducted the DLSZ Symphony Orchestra in the Chicago International Music Festival 2019 held in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The group was awarded with Gold bringing pride to the De La Salle Zobel community and country. On August 7, 2019, his chamber strings students won a Gold Award in the Singapore Raffles International Music Festival 2019, Singapore. On August 12, 2022, he led the DLSZ Strings and won numerous awards at the Singapore Raffles International Music Festival 2022 (Online Competition), including the GOLD with HONOURS– the Highest Award distinction, the Gold Award, The Silver Award in the Instrumental Ensemble Category and The Elite Award, and the Excellent Performance Award in the Individual Strings Category. Presently, he is one of the promising faculty member of De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, Strings teacher for both grade school and high school students and Strings Orchestra Director of the De La Salle Zobel Strings.
