ENSEMBLES 2009

Cantanima - Steirischer Landesjugendchor

Cantanima - Steirischer Landesjugendchor

CantAnima was founded in 2004 by the Styrian Choral Association (Steirischer Saengerbund), bringing together gifted and enthusiastic young singers aged 16-26 from all over the Austrian province of Styria. Every season after the audition phase, the choir meets in blocked rehearsals to work on their demanding repertoire. It is thanks to a combination of personal commitment on the part of each individual singer, intensive rehearsal sessions and additional vocal coaching that the choir can maintain consistently high standards of musical achievement. This is choral music at its very best: performed with balance and precision, partly by heart, and true to the name CantAnima, always with soul.

CantAnima has participated in top festivals and performs regularly not only in Styria but throughout Austria. The choir members are particularly proud of their success in international competitions. At the Praga Cantat Festival 2005 in Prague, Cantanima won 1st prize in the category mixed choirs as well as the special award for best repertoire, and was even nominated best choir of the entire festival. In 2006, CantAnima won 1st prize in the category mixed youth choirs at the Lira competition in Warsaw. At the 5th World Choir Games in Graz in summer 2008, CantAnima was awarded a gold medal by the international jury and came third in the category mixed youth choirs, making it the best European choir in that category.

CantAnima is directed by Franz M. Herzog (artistic director) and Miriam Ahrer (executive director and assistant conductor), who, with a wealth of experience and dedication, inspire the young singers to give of their best for this exceptional choir.
