TERMS AND CONDITIONS
General Festival Information
- The annual Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival Vienna (hereinafter
referred to as the "Festival"), organized and presented by Via Musica (Vienna International
Association for Music and Culture Exchange), is intended to promote interaction and competition among young musicians on an international level.

The Festival consists of the Summa Cum Laude Competition (hereinafter referred to as the"Competition") and the non-competitive Summa Cum Laude Celebration (hereinafter referred
to as the "Celebration").

The Festival shall take place in Vienna from the 4th to the 8th of July 2009 and is open to
young musicians of all nations below the age of 26. A maximum of 10% of the participants
may be between 26 and 30 years of age. Conductors and piano players accompanying the
choirs are not subject to the age limit.
- Concerning chaperones and additional personnel, 10% of the number of performers will be accepted free of charge. These persons will be admitted to all festival events, including the Gala Concert, at no extra charge.

The Competition concerts as well as the Gala Concert with performances by the winners of
the respective categories will be held in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein. Participants of the
Celebration will perform in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein before an audience consisting
of their fellow participants.

All participants of the Celebration are required to be present at the Celebration concert, be it
as performers or as spectators.

Participants of the Competition and the Celebration will take part in special workshops,
seminars and additional concerts.

All participants shall receive a confirmation concerning their participation at the Festival.

All applicants undertake not to copy or reproduce works during or for the Festival. The
participants agree to have their names and photographs used for promotional purposes
relating to the Festival. Via Musica is entitled to record, reproduce and dispose of the musical
works of the participants and of the media submitted. Via Musica is entitled to prohibit photos
and video recordings of the events taking place during the Festival; all photos and video
recordings taken on the premises of the Musikverein must be previously authorised by Via
Musica.
Registration and Required Materials
- Due to a limited capacity, Via Musica strongly recommends registration as soon as possible.
As outlined below, the registration procedure consists of the following chronological steps:
- The registration deadlines and the corresponding festival fees are as follows.
Please note that step 1) of the registration procedure as outlined above must be completed
within the registration deadline in order for the corresponding festival fee to apply. Should the
festival fee not reach Via Musica within 4 weeks after acceptance (step 3)), the applicable fee
at the time of actual payment (see below) will be charged.

- The application to the Festival must contain the following materials. The materials required
within the registration deadline as well as photos and the data sheet may be sent
electronically (application form by fax). All other materials are to be sent via postal mail.

Promotional material (i.e. logos) is welcome but not compulsory. Please note that apart from
four conductor scores, documents will not be returned.
- Applications und other materials are to be sent to the artistic director of the Festival:
- Via Musica shall decide on the acceptance of applicants within 2 weeks after receiving the application as outlined above; the decision is final and no explanations will be given on behalf of Via Musica. Applications which do not conform to the regulations of the Festival can be rejected. By sending in the signed application form the signatory accepts the terms and conditions of the Festival as well as all decisions of the jury; legal procedures are thereby ruled out. The signatory represents the ensemble and ensures that the participants are aware of the terms and conditions set down by Via Musica.
Participation Fee and Bank Account
- Upon being accepted to the Festival, the applicant is required to transfer the appropriate festival fee to the following account within 4 weeks:

- Should the ensemble not be able to attend, the following percentage of the fee will be refunded upon cancellation:
- until 28th of April 2009 - full refund of the application fee;
- until 15th of May 2009 - 75 % refund of the application fee;
- after 15th of May 2009 - no refund of the application fee.

Within a time period of 15 to 20 minutes the participants are required to present the following pieces:
- compulsory pieces (see below);
- one piece by a composer of the ensemble's home country;
- additional piece(s) required in order to reach the minimum playing time, to be freely chosen.
The piece by a composer of the ensemble's home country and the additional piece(s) required in order to reach the minimum playing time may be accompanied by a piano player supplied by the choir.
Along with the application, applicants are to inform Via Musica of the pieces presented with the accompaniment of a piano. The pieces not freely chosen are to be presented at the beginning of the program.

Within a maximum time period of 20 to 25 minutes the participants are required to present the following pieces:
- the compulsory piece (see below);
- one piece of a composer from the ensemble's home country;
- one piece of music in contemporary style, which can be identical with the piece by the composer of the ensemble's home country;
- additional piece(s) required in order to reach the minimum playing time, to be freely chosen. The participants are advised to present a broad program that entails technical difficulties and fast passages, as well as calmer movements and works in order to give the jury a broad basis of decisionmaking.
The pieces not freely chosen are to be presented at the beginning of the program.

3. BANDS
Within a maximum time period of 20 to 25 minutes the participants are required to present the following pieces:
- the compulsory piece (see below);
- one piece by a composer of the ensemble's home country;
- additional piece(s) required in order to reach the minimum playing time, to be freely chosen.
The pieces not freely chosen are to be presented at the beginning of the program.

Competition Repertoire and Material
- Only original compositions are to be presented. In the event that only a part of the work is performed, the beginning and the end of the extract is to be clearly indicated on the scores handed in.
- Via Musica shall decide on whether or not the suggested repertoire meets with the conditions of the Festival.
- After the end of the Festival four of the conductor scores will be returned to the participants; all other materials shall remain with Via Musica.
- The jury has the right to assign the piece of the ensemble's competition repertoire that is to be performed in the Gala Concert.
Celebration - Music Selection and Duration
- Participants of the Celebration are free to choose their musical program. The participants are invited to present one piece from their home country. The maximum playing time shall be 20 minutes.
Competition and Celebration - Additional Concerts
- Each group may take part in at least two additional concerts taking place in and around Vienna. The concerts shall have a length of approximately one hour. Participants are required to hand in their freely chosen concert programs at the latest with the Festival application. The suggested concert program is binding. Please include the approximate duration of the works.
- Once confirmed by Via Musica, the additional concerts may not be cancelled by the ensemble.
- Instruments and technical equipment are generally not supplied by Via Musica. Should additional equipment be required, the participants are asked to contact Via Musica's artistic partner for organizational assistance as soon as possible. Costs accrued by the hiring of additional equipment are not carried by Via Musica.
- Costs accrued by travel and board in connection with additional concerts are carried by the participants.
Travel and Accommodation
- Via Musica is not responsible for organizing and carrying costs for (international and local) travel, board and lodging but will be of assistance in organizing reasonably priced solutions. Participants requiring travel, board and lodging are kindly asked to inform Via Musica in due time, at the latest when submitting their application.
