PROGRAM - Orchestras

 

Orchestras may choose to take part in the SCL Competition or in the SCL Celebration.

 

SCL Competition

For the Competition the following categories apply:
  • Symphony Orchestras
  • Chamber Orchestras with Winds
  • String Orchestras
In the Competition choirs take part in the following program:

- The opening ceremony in St. Stephen’s Cathedral
- 3 workshops at the University of Music
- 2 additional concerts in and around Vienna
- 1 performance before the jury in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein
- If chosen by the jury: concert in the evening Gala Winners’ Concert in the Musikverein or the Konzerthaus
- Closing ceremony in Vienna’s Town Hall


Within a time period of 20 to 25 minutes the participants are required to present the following pieces to the jury:
  • the compulsory piece (see below);
  • one piece of a composer from the ensemble's home country;
  • one piece of music in contemporary style, which can be identical with the piece by the composer of the ensemble's home country;
  • additional piece(s) required in order to reach the minimum playing time, to be freely chosen.

 

The participants are advised to present a broad program that entails technical difficulties and fast passages, as well as calmer movements and works in order to give the jury a broad basis of decision-making. No solo pieces are allowed.

 

 

SCL Celebration
In the Celebration orchestras take part in the following program:

- The opening ceremony in St. Stephen’s Cathedral
- 3 workshops at the University of Music
- 2 additional concerts in and around Vienna
- 1 afternoon performance in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein
- Closing ceremony in Vienna’s Town Hall

 

Workshop pieces (for the Competition and the Celebration):

The participants are required to prepare two workshop pieces, one of which must be a waltz. The workshop pieces can be found here: required music pieces. The participants are required to bring along the corresponding conductor scores.
