The Haydn Youth String Orchestra HJSO was founded in 1989 and consists of young players aged 12 – 19 from the northern half of the Netherlands. The orchestra offers them the opportunity to develop a specific string-ensemble-sound, playing together at rehearsals, study weekends and concerts. The HJSO gives some 20 concerts every season; young soloists are given the opportunity to perform with the orchestra. In addition the HJSO features a preparatory ensemble and chamber music activities. The orchestra has recorded some 20 high-quality CD’s and DVD’s. The founders of the orchestra have received a royal decoration for their work.
Every year the HJSO travels abroad to give concerts. In the past the orchestra visited Austria, England, Scotland, Scandinavia, Latvia, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, the United States and the Caribbean.
The orchestra has acquired international recognition and won several contests, for instance the ‘Ehrepreis der Kulturabteilung der Stadt Wien’ (1992 & 2001) and the European Youth Music Festival Neerpelt (Belgium, 2001).
The HJSO is associated with institutes like the Prince Claus Conservatoire Groningen, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the North-Netherlands Orchestra and the Accademia San Felice Florence. The orchestra is conducted by Jan-Ype Nota, cellist of the North-Netherlands Orchestra and teacher at the Prince Claus Conservatory Groningen and the Royal Conservatoire The Hague.
