

The Orchestrai Shedari Kurdistan - Kurdish String Orchestra - was founded in 2006. It comprises musicians from all parts of the Kurdistan-region of Iraq, many of them are young graduates from the Institutes of Fine Arts of Sulaimanya, Erbil and Dohuk. The Kurdish String Orchestra has participated in many Festivals inside the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. It has also established regular contacts with musicians in countries such as Austria, Sweden and the USA. In 2007 the Kurdish String Orchestra participated in the first ever Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival in Vienna and has reached the 2nd place (with excellent success) in the festival's competition. In August 2008 the Kurdish String Orchestra participated in a workshop held by the American voice organization with violinist Marc Theyer and cellist James Nacy. In 2009, the Swedish conductor (conductora swedyaka ) Daniel Bjorkdahl performed a concert with the Kurdish String Orchestra in Erbil and Sulaimanya. The Orchestra wishes to bring peace instead of war and to bring calmness instead of anxiety through classical music.
